Q) Does the Fiberglass option add weight to the rocket?
A) Yes, the fiberglass fins are stronger and heavier than 1/4 Birchwood ply. In some cases, extra weight may need to be added to the nosecone for proper balance.
Q) How do I make the Fiberglass fin mounting strong?
A) Ruff up the fin root and 1/2" above the airframe when installed on to the fin with 80 grid sandpaper, use 5 Min. Epoxy along the fin root and the motor tube to tack it too. Then tape it to hold while drying, after setting up, start to add fillet to the airframe and fin joint ( use 20 min. epoxy and maybe add Milled Fiber (available from BSD) to the epoxy for strength. use your finger tip dipped in alcohol to smooth the fillet. Do only (1) fin at a time and use the Fin Alignment guide to make sure the fins are straight. Take your Time!!!
Q) What is Milled Fiber?
A) Milled fiber is 1/32" long strands of fiberglass cloth that appears as a fine white powder. When added to epoxy in the proper amount, it can effectively triple the strength of the joint. Especially helpful when adding fillets to fins, Milled Fiber can also be used for motor mount attachment, or any other high stress epoxy bonding application. You may make fin fillets up to 1/3 the size you normally would with little or no loss of strength!
